1)     How do I change roommates?

Before you consider looking at changing rooms, the first thing you and your roommate need to do is fill out a Roommate Agreement. If problems continue to occur contact your RA and see if they can help. If all else fails, get a Room Change Request form from your RA or Hall Director

2)     Do you provide Lofting Kits?

Lofting kits are provided in Peterson. In Connolly and Palmerton, they are not provided however you are able to build your own loft. Here are the lofting guidelines: http://reslife.sdsmt.edu/handbook/facilities.html

3)     Can I have a Microwave in my room?

In Peterson one small size microwave is allowed per room. In Connolly and Palmerton microwaves are not allowed in resident rooms. However, there are a limited number of Micro-Fridge units available for rent from Residence Life.  Micro-Fridge is a brand name for a unit that features a small microwave and a refrigerator that alternate energy draw to ensure the unit is not pulling too much energy from a circuit.  There are other brands of this type of unit; all of which are available for purchase direct to the student.

4)     Can I get entry into the other dorms?

You only have access to the dorm you live in, and must be a guest of another resident if you wish to enter another dorm. The only exception is that FIRST students may get access to Peterson Second Floor to use the study lounge.

5)     Who do I contact if I lose my dorm key?

If you lose your keys contact, go to the Residence Life Office located in Surbeck Center.  If you lose your keys after hours, contact an RA who will assist you contacting the on-call Sr. Staff person.

6)     Are their dorm quiet hours?

Conditions must be favorable for study at all times. Disturbing noises are always inappropriate. Students who are playing cards or other games in the lounges, hallways or cooking rooms are asked to display respect for their fellow students in keeping noise and other disturbances to a minimum. Students must keep stereos, radios and TV sets at a low level at all times. The use of headphones is advised. Your wing or floor community may establish quiet hours as a measure to provide a quiet atmosphere for studying or sleeping.

7)     What is the visitation policy?

Each Hall Council sets visitation hours for their particular building. Currently all residence halls have 24 hour visitation. Students wishing to change visitation hours need to work with their respective hall councils and hall director.

All residents are responsible for their non-resident guests at all times.  If you have let a non-student or non-resident into the building or into your room, you are responsible for their behavior.

Overnight guests are welcome, if visitation policy within your building allows for overnight guests.  Additionally, when you have an overnight guest, you must let your RA know in advance that you have overnight guests.  You must ensure that your roommate is okay with you having overnight guests.  And finally, you need to make sure that your guest is not staying on-campus more than 4 nights within any 30 day period (if they are staying more than 4 nights, they need to be paying rent).

8)     Do we have to pay for our cable/internet?

No, expanded basic cable and high-speed internet are included within your room rent.

9)     If I change rooms or leave the dorms, do I need to checkout?

Yes. Anytime you are moving out of your room you must first officially check-out with your RA and sign off on related paperwork.

10) Who do I checkout with?

You should make advance arrangements with your RA.  If needed, you may also check-out with your Hall Director.

11) If I want to change rooms during the academic year, when can I move into my new room?

Once you have submitted a Room Change Request form with all the appropriate signatures, Residence Life will tell you when your new room is available to move into.  You may get a Room Change Request form from your neighborhood RA.

12) Can I get a single room?

Single rooms may or may not be available each semester.

13) Does my room rent increase if my roommate moves out?

No, your room rent does not increase if your roommate moves out during the middle of a semester. However, Residence Life will look to put another roommate in the room as soon as possible. If you refuse a new roommate or are not willing to consolidate and move to another room with a roommate, you will then be charged for a single room.
