Bicycles and Bicycle Registration
Outside racks
are conveniently located for bicycle storage near each of the halls. There
are no indoor storage facilities for bicycles. Bicycles are not to be
parked or stored in lounges, hallways, stairwells, bathrooms, laundry
rooms or kitchens of the residence halls. Students may, with roommate
approval, store their bicycles in their rooms. Bicycles remaining in the
area after completion of spring semester may be considered abandoned and
turned in to the Rapid City Police Department. You are required to
register your bicycle on-line. Upon registration, you will get a
registration sticker that needs to be affixed to your bicycle. Only
bicycle with registration stickers affixed may be parked or locked to
racks located near the residence halls. Unregistered bicycles may be
confiscated. Such registration has been found to be helpful in the event
of a theft.
Bunking/Lofting Beds
Such
guidelines have been established for your safety. Adherence to all
guidelines is mandated. You are responsible to ensure that your bunk or
loft meets all guidelines. You will be directed to disassemble any bunk or
loft; that inhibits maintenance access, prohibits normal operation of any
room equipment or fails to comply with any guideline provided. Use care
and common sense when you decide to build a bunk or loft.
-
Use 2” X 4” stud grade
lumber or better,
-
All connections to be
made with 3/8” + bolts (preferably carriage bolts) and nuts with both
flat and lock washer.
-
Use diagonal bracing or
corner gussets for stability and conceal all projecting bolt ends with
nuts to reduce injury.
-
Platforms or deck (lofted
floors) ARE PROHIBITED. Questions? See the Director of Residence Life.
-
Bunks and lofts will not
be attached to walls or any hall structure. They must be free standing.
Do not use built-in shelves for support.
-
College-owned furniture
may not be used as step stools nor as support for bunks or lofts.
-
Bunked beds and lofts
MUST NOT interfere with the normal operation of, nor inhibit maintenance
access to, any equipment to include
-
Fire detectors (12”
minimum clearance)
-
Sprinkler heads (cannot be located beneath a sprinkler
head)
-
Light fixtures, light
covers
-
Thermostats
-
Heater, heater covers
-

-
Entry door
-
If bed legs or other bed
components are disassembled, all hardware must be retained and the bed
COMPLETELY REASSEMBLED IN ITS ORIGINAL CONFIGURATION when room is
vacated.
Guidelines specific to
each hall must also be adhered to as follows:
|
Connolly Hall |
Adjustable bunk beds
may be used in room corner in an over-under configuration. If lofting is
desired, head and foot boards, bed frame, and all parts must be
incorporated in the loft or stored in the room and not be altered in any
way. Bed must be fully restored to original configuration with mattress
and bedspring being at knee height when vacating room. When bunking,
always use bunking pins and any other hardware provided for your
personal safety. Bunking pins and hardware are available from your RA or
hall director and must be returned to your RA or hall director at
check-out.
|
|
Palmerton Hall |
There will be a minimum
clearance of 34.5” between the top of the top mattress of any bunk or
loft and the ceiling and a minimum 12” clearance between ceiling and any
part of your structure.
|
|
Peterson Hall |
Lofting kits are provided with each
bed in the Peterson Hall - one lofting kit per bed. No other lofting is allowed. When lofted, bed decks
must have at least two (2) notches exposed above the deck on the head and
foot board. Lofted beds may not be located directly beneath a fire sprinkler
head. Bunked beds may not be lofted. No more than one lofting kit
maybe used with one bed.

Elevators
(for passengers in Palmerton and Peterson)
Passenger elevators are provided in Palmerton and Peterson Halls to allow
ADA access to all floors and as a convenience to all residents. Weight
limits are posted in each elevator car - do NOT overload the elevator
cars. SDSM&T has contracted KONE Inc to provide scheduled preventative
maintenance for all elevators on campus. Please report any problems with
dorm elevators to your Hall Director or the Residence Life Office
immediately.
If
you are trapped in an elevator, an emergency phone is located in the car
which dials directly to Campus Safety (394-6100). NEVER attempt to open
the elevator door if are in trapped in the car. Residence Life staff in
Palmerton and Peterson have been trained on elevator rescue procedures and
will assist as needed.
Never use an elevator when there is a fire
or when the fire alarm sounds.
Please take precautions when moving items in and out of the elevators.
Excessive movement, including jumping or bouncing while the elevator car
is going up or down, may cause the elevator safeties to engage and the car
will stop moving. This will result in common area damages being assessed.
Laundry
Coin
operated facilities are provided in Connolly, Palmerton and Peterson
Halls and at each apartment complex. Hours are posted in the residence halls for the use of these
facilities. Observance of such hours is expected to minimize disturbance
to residents located near the facilities.
Mail
Each resident
is assigned a mailbox with a combination lock. You will have the same
mailbox throughout your uninterrupted stay in the residence halls. Do not
remove windows or otherwise alter the box. Charges, or appropriate
disciplinary action, will be assessed against box holders who abuse/misuse
mailboxes. All mailboxes are located in Surbeck Center. If you receive a
package or a parcel that must be signed for, a notice will be placed in
your mailbox. You may sign for and pick up your package at the main desk
in Surbeck Center.
Parking
Residence Hall students are eligible for overnight parking permits (green
and orange). Green permits are available for students who have
completed at least 32 credit hours (changing to 20 credit hours completed
in Fall 2007). Parking permits are purchased on-line from the
Parking WebPages.
Reserved parking spots are provided for the
four ResLife Sr. Staff members who live on-campus. These staff
members are expected to respond to on-campus emergencies at a moment's
notice. Quick access to the residence halls is necessary and
therefore parking spots are reserved for their use. These spots are
designated with Reserved parking signs.
Off-street parking at the apartments is
designated by apartment unit. Parking may be restricted depending on
occupancy load and demand.
Recycling Program
Containers are available throughout the residence halls for collection of
“blue bag” recyclables. You are requested to use these containers for
aluminum cans and plastics. Paper recycling collection containers are
located in the computer lab and study lounges.
Repair and Replacement

RA, Hall Director or the Residence Life Office regarding room repairs.
Contact your RA or hall custodian for light bulb replacements. Notify the

buildings. Apartment maintenance issues should be reported to your
respective apartment manager.

university does not have facilities to offer for the storage of personal
belongings. Hallways, stairwells, lounges and kitchens are not to be used
for storage. “Excess” furniture from student rooms must remain in the
room.
