Residence Life at
the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
augments the mission of the Division of Student
Affairs and the institution through responsible
community living, learning and leading. Residence
Life supports this mission as follows:
-
Housing
facilities offer a safe, modern, living and
learning environment for on-campus students;
-
Resident
students achieve academic success;
-
Resident
students demonstrate responsible and ethical
community behavior.
Residence hall
living is a unique and valuable part of your
educational experience. You will spend more time in
the hall than in any other location on campus. It is
the place where you will develop relationships with
people who will exert more influence on you than any
other campus group—and you on them.
The Residence Life
staff (especially Resident Assistants, the Assistant Hall Director, Hall Directors,
NAU Crew Coordinators
and Apartment Managers) will play a role in
providing a comprehensive array of programs designed
to refine and expand your skills and knowledge and
provide you with services that enhance your stay in
the residence halls and apartments. Also, much like life outside
the college environment, living in the residence
halls (or apartments) can present difficulties and problems. The
Residence Life staff is available to help you
resolve many of these difficulties, but you have a
responsibility too.
As a member of this
unique community, you will have many opportunities
to influence our living environment. Living in a
group environment requires some basic guidelines.
They are used to protect the rights of the
individual in a group-living situation. But, there
will be situations in which you will need to make
decisions about your behavior, and you will be
accountable for the choices you make.
Remember, the
residence life staff is available to assist you in
any way possible. The variety of opportunities
available to you will help in your development as a
student and as a person. Hopefully, most will be
positive experiences that will influence you
throughout your life. How much or how little you
grow will depend largely on yourself and your
attitude toward your environment. Make a commitment
to succeed at the School of Mines. We are here to
help you!
